The things you should know about VTE and STK

Blood clotting is a common health condition that may occur to anyone, anytime.  It is a dangerous ailment that can often be fatal if not attended to immediately. Even admitted patients in hospitals are not totally safe from it and may even overlook it enough to let it develop into more severe disease such as Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) or Stroke.

It is important to know everything about blood clotting, especially VTE and stroke, in order to avoid failure of seeing the condition and increasing chances of mortality.

What is VTE?

Venous Thromboembolism or VTE is a combination of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). It occurs when a blood clot bursts and flows into the vessels, blocking the pulmonary arteries. It is usually caused by venous stasis (slow blood flow) and hypercoagulability (when blood thickens and turns into gel), which in turn are both results of lack of locomotion, blood vessel damage, pregnancy, usage of contraceptives, obesity, or genetics.

What is Stroke?

Stroke is described as suffering from brain malfunction caused by an abnormality in blood flow to the brain. It varies in severity, rendering a victim’s body slightly immobile or completely paralyzed. It occurs when blood becomes incapable of delivering oxygen and food to the brain, killing brain cells that allow signals from the brain to different body parts.

Treatment and Prevention

VTE and Stroke can be avoided through regular exercise, avoiding staying stationary for over an hour, eating food with high salt content, suffering from physical trauma. As per treatment methods, taking Anticoagulants as prescribed by doctors will help break blood clots and allow better blood flow.

Choosing the right hospital

The CMS or Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services has developed a system called core measure that involve getting the percentage of eligible patients that received care represented by the measure. It reduces data gathering procedures and probabilities of death. It also determines the accuracy and efficiency of a medical facility, which is often analyzed by core measure abstraction companies.
