Certified Tumor Registrars (CTR) VA

Health Information Alliance, Inc is looking for Certified Tumor Registrars (CTRs) that would be willing to work remotely on a PRN basis.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Candidates are expected to provide complete and accurate cancer registry data abstractions using all coding and data abstraction specific manuals. Accurately code the classification of oncology/tumor diseases, diagnosis, procedures, and treatments required by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Perform case finding, follow-up, and quality control. Works with, and Reports to, the HIA Cancer Registry Management Team. Contacts the management and quality control team for any support or training needed. Assists the management team with meeting the goals and deadlines for each assigned project and meets productivity and quality standards. Candidates are expected to have knowledge of medical terminology and utilize sources such as pathology reports, cytology reports, oncology reports, and the discharge indices to identify cases of malignant diseases that meet the criteria for analytic cases. All candidates are expected to express professional courtesy and communication on a consistent basis.

Qualification and Education Requirements:

  •  Must have a valid CTR Certification
  •  Successful completion of the HIA Pre-Employment Skills Assessment Exam
  •  Computerized Patient Record System in VISTA and Oncotrax (VA software), experience preferred
  •  QOPI experience, preferred
  •  Minimum of 3-year’s abstraction experience within a CoC Accredited Cancer Program, required
  •  Associate Degree in health information or related field preferred
  •  Knowledge and understanding of the Commission on Cancer standards and accreditation process, preferred
  •  Exposure to cancer registry management and registry related functions (abstracting and non-abstracting functions), preferred
  •  Proficient in Microsoft Office products, industry-related cancer registry software systems and electronic medical record applications

  • Computer literacy
    • Must be comfortable with, but not limited to: Excel, web-browsers, email, electronic health records (non-specific)
    • Must be familiar with various technologies such as, but not limited to: security (e.g., Citrix), data collection/abstraction, encoders, web-based applications
  • Self-maintenance of skillset
    • Maintaining credentials
    • Staying current with abstraction/coding rules, manuals, and guidelines
  • Prior experience in position applying for
  • Motivation; remote work can be team-based, but requires the ability to work independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills and tactfulness to be able to effectively communicate with team members and client contacts
